Shillong (Meghalaya), Aug 5: The Meghalaya government has taken a significant step towards regulating street vending and improving urban management in Shillong. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who also holds the Urban Affairs portfolio, distributed relocation allowance cheques to 17 street vendors who have been shifted to the MUDA Complex, Khyndai Lad.
Each vendor received ₹10,000 as part of the government’s support initiative. The government plans to relocate over 400 eligible street vendors to designated vending zones across the city. Dhar expressed satisfaction with the progress and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing livelihoods through structured urban planning. He acknowledged that there were initial challenges during the relocation process but emphasized that the ultimate goal is to improve the lives of the vendors.
The ceremony was attended by Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, underscoring the government’s focus on urban development and vendor welfare. The relocation effort aims to bring order and structure to street vending in Shillong, ensuring better management and opportunities for vendors.
