Tura (Meghalaya), Nov 11: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Students of Tura Campus, and Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) HQ are protesting against NEHU Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla. The controversy surrounds the alleged illegal appointment of Campus Director Sujata Gurudev, which has sparked long-pending demands from students and pressure groups.
Protesters at the North-Eastern Hill University’s (NEHU) Tura Campus are demanding several key changes, including the immediate appointment of a local Pro-Vice Chancellor for both the Shillong and Tura campuses, equal pay for equal work for NEHU staff, and the appointment of a Joint Registrar and Deputy Registrar specifically for the Tura Campus . Additionally, they are calling for the creation of more departments at the Tura Campus, prioritizing local residents for employment opportunities, and the immediate resignation of NEHU Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla . The protesters are also seeking the announcement of the Post Graduate Students Union (PGSU) election at the Tura Campus.
The protesters claim that the university has failed to address their concerns, prompting this agitation. The NEHU Tura Campus, established in 1996, has 11 departments offering PG and PhD courses . With rankings like 80th position under the ‘University’ category in NIRF 2023, the university’s reputation is at stake.
