Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 13 : Lambor Malngiang, the former Nongkrem MLA and MDC, has officially joined the National People’s Party (NPP) today. He was welcomed into the party by NPP national president and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister and State NPP president Prestone Tynsong, and other senior party leaders.
Malngiang’s decision to join the NPP is seen as a significant boost to the party’s grassroots network in Meghalaya. According to NPP state working president Hamletson Dohling, around 600 leaders and supporters are expected to join the party along with Malngiang.
The move is considered tactical, given that Nongkrem is the bastion of sitting MLA and VPP supremo, Ardent Basaiawmoit. Malngiang’s entry into the NPP may potentially strengthen the party’s position in the constituency.
Malngiang has had a varied political career, having contested elections under different parties, including KHNAM, Congress, and UDP. He won the Nongkrem Assembly seat as an independent candidate in 2018 but lost to VPP chief Ardent Basaiawmoit in the 2023 polls
