Shillong ( Meghalaya), June 2 : The Opposition Congress MLA and Chairperson of the Assembly Committee for Empowerment of Women, Ms .Ampareen Lyngdoh has urged Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh to remove, Thomas Sangma as member of the House Committees as an FIR has been lodged against him on charges of rape .
A lady alleged in her FIR said that she was repeatedly raped by the MLA Thomas Sangma number of times at her residence and at Magnum Hotel , situated in Police bazar area of the city .
The lady stated that Thomas Sangma was raping her repeatedly with the promise of marrying her .
In a letter she said our criminal justice system has historically been tilted against women, and it is for this sole reason rape victims must be entitled to a benefit of doubt, when she raises an allegation of sexual assault.
In the letter she has also asked the Speaker, to remove Sangma from the position of Chairman of Assembly Committee on Estimates and as member of the Committee on Public Accounts until the police investigation and trial are complete.
