Umiam (Meghalaya), Jan 9: The Northeast region of India is poised to outshine other areas in agriculture and horticulture, according to Union Minister for Agriculture, Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Speaking at the Golden Jubilee and Farmers Expo 2025, Chouhan emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts for sustainable agricultural growth in the region.
The event, held at the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region in Umiam, Meghalaya, marked 50 years of dedication to agricultural innovation and development in the Northeastern states of India. The program was inaugurated by the Governor of Meghalaya, C.H. Vijayashankar, in the presence of other dignitaries, including Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma.
Chouhan highlighted the region’s vast potential, citing the example of bamboo, which he believes can be a game-changer for farmers in the Northeast. He also praised the cultural respect for women in the region, noting that it is the mother who runs the family in many Northeastern households.
The Expo showcased the region’s rich agricultural diversity, with various stalls displaying local produce and innovative farming techniques. With the government’s focus on supporting agricultural innovation and farmer welfare, the Northeast region is indeed poised to emerge as a hub for agricultural excellence.
