Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 14: Nongkseh has emerged as the champion of the SSA Champions Cup, defeating Shillong Lajong 2-1 in a nail-biting encounter that went into extra time. The match, played at the SSA Stadium, saw a packed crowd of over 12,000 fans cheering for their favorite teams.
Lajong took the lead in the 27th minute through Babysunday Marngar, but Nongkseh equalized in the dying moments of stoppage time, with Kynsaibor Lhuid scoring a crucial goal. The match then went into extra time, where Hardy Cliff Nongbri scored the winner in the 120th minute, securing a 2-1 victory for Nongkseh.
The introduction of Shano Tariang in the second half proved to be a turning point for Nongkseh, as his assertive presence in midfield allowed the team to control the game and create scoring opportunities. Lajong’s Wanteilang Malngiang made several impressive saves to keep his team in the game, but ultimately, Nongkseh’s determination paid off.
The win marks a significant milestone for Nongkseh, who have now accumulated 15 unbeaten matches in SSA competitions this season. The victory also signals a potential shift in the balance of power in Meghalaya football, with Nongkseh poised to challenge the dominance of the traditional powerhouses.
Kynsaibor Lhuid was named the Hello Meghalaya Player of the Final, while Nongkseh took home a trophy and a cheque of Rs 8 lakh, with Lajong receiving Rs 4 lakh as runners-up.
