Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 2: A massive protest gathered near the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) campus today, consisting of a section of teachers, students pressure groups, and others, determined to prevent Vice Chancellor Prof. PS Shukla from entering the campus.
To maintain law and order, police personnel were deployed, and a high-level police source revealed that they were also monitoring the nearby Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati to track any movement of the VC.
The protest comes amidst the VC’s leave extension till December 15, sparking speculation about the outcome. Earlier, the VC was set to resume duty on December 2, but the extension has cast uncertainty over his return.
The developments follow a series of protests and demands for the VC’s removal, citing allegations of mismanagement and other issues. The Meghalaya Indigenous Tribes Constitutional Rights Movement (MITCRM) had also submitted a resolution to the President of India, calling for the VC’s immediate removal.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen what the next step from the Centre will be. Will the VC’s leave extension pave the way for a peaceful resolution, or will the protests continue to escalate? Only time will tell.
