Sohra (Meghalaya), Jan 11 : Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, along with his cabinet members, including Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak, visited Siej village in East Khasi Hills as part of a two-day cabinet retreat in Sohra. The retreat aims to chart the state’s vision for growth and development by 2032, when Meghalaya will celebrate 60 years of statehood.
During the visit, the Chief Minister announced the government’s commitment to preserving age-old traditions and improving local infrastructure. He highlighted the significance of the Umkar Living Root bridge, a 300-year-old symbol of sustainable architecture and community-driven development.
The Chief Minister also met Hally War, the man behind the living root bridge, who shared his lifelong commitment to maintaining the structure. War began weaving the bridge as a young boy and has served as the village headman for nearly 40 years.
New infrastructure projects were announced, including the construction of new roads and the upgrading of school buildings. The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of rural communities and recognized the importance of tourism for economic growth in the region.
