Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 10: In a landmark judgment, the Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to relocate the Shillong Zoo and take concrete measures to address the street dog menace in public places.
The court’s order, dated February 10, 2025, comes in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Kaustav Paul. The division bench, comprising Mr. Justice LP. Mukerji, Chief Justice, and Mr. Justice W. Diengdoh, Judge, expressed satisfaction with the government’s efforts to shift the zoo, as reported on November 27, 2024.
The court has instructed the government to take immediate action to relocate the zoo and implement effective measures to tackle the street dog menace. The order aims to ensure the safety and well-being of both humans and animals in the state.
