Shillong (Meghalaya) , Feb 29 : Fresh violence was reported from various pockets here dominated by the non tribals today after curfew was withdrawn at 8 am in the morning . Seeing the deteriorating law and order situation the district administration has reimposed indefinite curfew from 12 noon today in certain sensitive areas .
The order under Section 144 CrpC was promulgated from 12:00 Noon today until further orders.
The areas where curfew has been reimposed are Police Bazar, Jail Road, Keating Road, Polo, Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission Mawprem, Lumdiengjri. Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Boucher Road and Mawlonghat (excluding localities beyond Umshrypi bridge.)
There were number of incidents reported from Polo area and Barabazar . At least 7 non tribals received serious injuries due the clashes . One non – tribal person identified as Rup Chand Dewan was killed after he was stabbed in Barabazar area . His body has been sent to the Civil Hospital.
Meanwhile , 3 battalions of para military forces are on their way to Shillong after the situation deteriorated today .
On Friday there was a KSU meeting in Ichamati . At around 3 pm, after the meeting, clashes broke out between KSU members and local non tribals of the area. Thereafter the KSU members burnt a haystack at the edge of the market and attempted to burn a house. The non-tribals retaliated and stoned one bus carrying KSU members. One local taxi which had gone to collect the KSU members from the Ichamati market after the clashes was damaged, one vehicle of EAC J Umdor was alsot damaged and four members of KSU were injured, two were sent to Ichamati CHC and released, two were referred to Sohra CHC. The person driving the local taxi Lurshai Hynniewta, 35 years, succumbed to his injuries.
Curfew was imposed in Shillong agglomeration and adjoining areas and internet services have been suspended in the six districts of the Eastern Range as a precautionary measure.
