Shillong(Meghalaya), Sept,1: Meghalaya Minister Lahkhmen Rymbui today said that he will continue as Minister of Home (Police) Department as the state Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is yet to relieve him from the Home portfolio .
Earlier, Rymbui had tendered his resignation on Aug 15 last and had requested CM, Sangma to relieve from the Home (Police) portfolio due to severe public criticism following the killing of former surrendered HNLC leader C Thangkhiew at his residence in Mawlai area on Aug 13 last .
The killing of surrendered HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew during wee hours of Aug 13, by police trigerred violence in Shillong and its adjoining areas. Several private and police vehicles were damaged and set ablaze on the day of Late Tangkhiew’s funeral . The administration had to also clamp indefinite curfew and ban internet for 48 hours to calm the situation .
Speaking to the media, Rymbui strongly criticized the Meghalaya Congress for blaming the United Democratic Party( UDP), a constituent of the NPP led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance Government in Meghalaya of misusing the Home (Police) Department for illegal tax collection.
“The allegation made by the Congress is a figment of their imagination. The UDP has never misused its position for its own benefit”, Rymbui added.
