Shillong (Meghalaya), March 25: The curtain has risen on the 1st Shillong International Film Festival, marking a proud milestone in Meghalaya’s journey as a burgeoning film hub. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma inaugurated the festival, emphasizing its potential to catapult local talent onto the global stage and create employment opportunities in the creative industry.
The festival, a brainchild of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, features a stellar lineup of events, including workshops, a short film competition, and screenings of captivating films like Pradip Kurbah’s “Ha Lyngkha Bneng”. The government has rolled out a slew of initiatives to support local creators, including a state-run OTT platform, financial assistance for filmmakers, and plans for a film city and institute.
The event paid tribute to prominent film personalities, acknowledging their tireless contributions to the industry. With its rich cultural heritage and vibrant youth, Meghalaya is poised to become a leading hub for filmmaking and creative industries in the Northeast. As the festival unfolds, stakeholders are optimistic about its potential to shine a spotlight on the state’s untapped talent and storytell.
