Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 7 : Jal Diwali -“Women for Water, Water for Women Campaign ” under Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs begins in Meghalaya today with the celebration at Urkhla Water Treatment Plant, Jowai.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Govt. of India is organising “Women for Water, Water for Women Campaign” to celebrate Jal Diwali from Nov 7 to Nov 9. In the said initiative women SHG members of DAY-NULM are being taken to Water Treatment Plants (WTP) for exposure on the various processes involved in supplying clean and safe drinking water to households. The main objective of the visit is to foster a sense of belonging and ownership among women towards the water infrastructure.
The visit in Jowai started with a welcome speech from the City Coordinator, DAY-NULM, Jowai Smti Emica S. Rymbai who welcomed all officials of AMRUT, DAY-NULM, PHE and the SHGs attending the program
During the public meeting the AMRUT Officials, state & city coordinators, explained the objective of the campaign and the necessity of such a visit. They encouraged the participants to actively participate in the program in order to broaden their knowledge on the water supply system of their own town.
The SDO, PHE incharge of the treatment plant Shri Roskil Challam provided the officials and the participants a tour of the facility explaining the water treatment process being carried in the treatment plant. With enthusiasm and dedication, the participants took part in the entire program who raised apt questions to the officials regarding the water treatment facility. They also expressed their gratitude to the Ministry for organising the program on the momentous occasion of Diwali.
After the tour was completed, a small meeting was convened to record the testimonials and feedback from the participants. The officials explained the various processes involved in water treatment. While interacting with the SHG members the officials emphasized on the importance of water and the need to conserve it.
Jal Diwali programme has been organized in 3 ULBs across Meghalaya covering Water Treatment Plants from 7th to 9th Nov. Similar exposure visits have been planned for on 8th and 9th of Nov at Mawphlang and Nongstoin ULBs respectively.
