Shillong (Meghalaya), Jan 6: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has swung into action following the tragic death of two people in a dynamite blast at a coal mine in Thangsko village, East Jaintia Hills District. The incident, reported in section local media on Jan 5, has prompted the Commission to take suo motu cognizance of the matter.
The MHRC has issued a notice to the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills District, seeking a detailed inquiry report into the incident. This move underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
The incident has raised concerns about safety and regulations in coal mining operations in Meghalaya, a region with a history of mining-related accidents. The MHRC’s probe aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and push for measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
