Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 6 : Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today said that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA)should be repealed.

Speaking to the media following the death of 14 civilians in a firing incident at Nagaland’s Mon district on Dec 4, the Chief Minister said he was aware of the various issues that the states of the region are facing including insurgency, but AFSPA is not the solution. He said instead there should be other laws to address these issues.

On the other hand, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has strongly condemned the killing of unarmed Naga civilians. In a statement issued to the media the student body demanded that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act should be immediately revoked and the Government should legislate new laws to protect and safeguard the people.
The Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) has also condemned the killing of 14 civilians by security forces in Nagaland. The civil society organization said that this is not the first time that civilians have been killed by security forces. Therefore ,TUR demands that the AFSPC should be repealed.
