Shillong (Meghalaya ), April 17 : It has come to the notice of Police that some individuals are gathering available information about a particular organization/ department and its employees from the internet. Name, Designation, Contact No., Pictures, ete. (of Superior officials and subordinates).
Thereafter, they impersonate as the Superior official of a particular organization using their name and picture obtained from the internet in social media sites and other apps esp, WhatsApp in order to dupe his/her subordinates.
‘The fraudsters send emails/ messages to selected subordinates from the list on the pretext that he is attending a very urgent meeting and is unable to make calls and hence, asking favour from them to purchase Amazon E-gift cards for him and send the same via WhatsApp or Email.
In view of the above, Citizens are requested not to fall prey to such emails/ messages and if they come across or receive any messages from such Superior official they should confirm verify before making any payment/ purchase and the matter should be immediately reported to the nearest Police Station or Cyber Crime Wing (CID), Meghalaya, Shillong for necessary action.
According to information , efforts are on track the cyber criminals who recently impersonated Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh,Health and Family Welfare Minister James Sangma & Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Sanbor Shullai by using their WhatsApp Image and seeking urgent financial help .
The youth wing of the National People’s Party, has already filed an FIR.
In the FIR it mentioned that the criminals has been impersonating James Sangma which is criminal in nature
