Shillong ( Meghalaya), July 18 : Following the nationwide protests in Bangladesh and reported clashes between students and government forces , the Government of Meghalaya is in constant touch with the Bangladesh High Commission and the Indian High Commission, Land Port Authority, Dawki and Exporters Association and has taken up all possible measures for the safety of these students.
According to official sources, 202 people from India which includes 198 students have entered through Dawki since the clashes.
A total of 67 students from Meghalaya and 131 students from the rest of the country have entered through ICP Dawki since the clashes broke out. There are also 101 students from Nepal , 7 from Bhutan and 4 tourists who have entered through ICP Dawki .
The Government of Meghalaya has activated the helpline number 1800-345-3644 for citizens of Meghalaya who may require assistance due to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.
Hiwot Rymbai MPS Addl SP Jowai (+91 96157 16153) has been deputed as a Nodal Officer at the border along with Executive Officer, Land Port Authority Dawki, Mr. Thomas (+91 84150 60802 ) as Asst. Nodal Officer. Helpline no 1800 345 3644 has also been activated.
As the quota protests and turmoil continue in Bangladesh, at least 18 people have reportedly been killed following nationwide clashes with security personnel. The stir that has left thousands injured, has crippled life in several cities in Bangladesh. The trains, metro, and the internet were hit. A TV station was torched too.
Mobile internet is inaccessible, and a TV station has been set ablaze. Train services in the country have been badly hit.
The quota stir in Bangladesh, which began on July 1 following the High Court’s reinstatement of the freedom fighters’ quota, reserving one-third of civil service posts for their descendants, has escalated into violent clashes.
The death toll climbed to 16 and thousands were reported injured.
Thousands of students, armed with sticks and rocks, have faced off against armed police in cities across Bangladesh, including Dhaka, Chattogram, Rangpur, and Cumilla.
