Shillong (Meghalaya) , Feb 2: Its again old wine in a new bottle in Meghalaya with National Peoples Party (NPP) virtually sweeping the polls with 26 seats and emerging as the single largest party .
The counting began at 8 am today for 59 assembly segments in state.
Meghalaya has 60 seats, but polling in the Sohiong seat was adjourned due to the death of a candidate former Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)got 2 seats , United Democratic Party (UDP) got 11 seats , Congress Party 5 seats , Trinamool Congress, 5 seats , Voice of Peoples Party (VPP) 4 seats , HIll States Peoples Democratic Party( HSPDP) 2 seats ,Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) 2 seats and Independents 2 .
It is most likely a coalition between estranged allies – NPP and BJP and UDP is on the cards as the opposition could not spring a surprise .According to per three exit polls the ruling NPP was predicted to emerge as the single largest party with 20 seats in a hung house with no party crossing the halfway mark.
Three major exit polls said that the Trinamool Congress (TMC)could emerge as the second largest party , followed by the Congress and the BJP.
Now, the UDP with 11 seats may emerge as a decisive factor.
Meanwhile , CM Conrad Sangma has announced a post-poll alliance with estranged BJP .However which other political parties would be part of the coalition is not yet clear .It is most likely that UDP would be roped in the new government.
Three major exit polls said that the Trinamool Congress (TMC)could emerge as the second largest party , followed by the Congress and the BJP.
Now, the UDP with 11 seats may emerge as a decisive factor.
