Kokrajhar (Assam),Oct 11: An inferno reduced the Fakiragram market early this morning in Kokrajhar district which left properties worth crores damaged or reduced to ashes .
More than 55 shops were completely gutted .The shops included grocery, vegetable and wholesale warehouses .
The fire had started from an electric shot circuit that occurred around 3.10 am.
However, the official version behind the fire is not yet known.
On being informed fire tenders from Kokrajhar rushed the spot to douse the fire from spreading .
This is the sixth incident of a massive fire in the market complex within the past ten years .
Two month’s ago, several shops and residential complexes were damaged due to a massive fire along the main road near railway gate at Fakiragram bazar this year.
In 2009 ,Four persons of a family were charred to death at Fakiragram due to a massive fire .
“The Fakiragram bazar has become cursed . Every year fire destroys shops and houses here causing huge loss to the businessman and traders”, said a businessman from Fakiragram bazar.
Agitated traders of the Fakiragram bazar staged a protest along the main road demanding setting up of a fire service station at Fakiragram and immediate compensation to the traders .
Later, the demonstration was called off after deputy commissioner assured to hold a magisterial enquiry into fire incident and setting up of a fire service station at Fakiragram and compensation to the affected traders.
“I have lost all goods in the shop as fire reduced my shop to ashes .I am now helpless as fire damaged all my goods . This is was the only source of income for me and my family to survive “,Jiban Ghosh a grocery owner said .
“My shoe shop and other properties are totally reduced to ashes “, said Naznima Begum,a trader in Fakiragram bazar.
Kokrajhar DC, Bhaskar Phukan said that assessment of the damages have already started from the revenue department and necessary compensation would be given to the affected traders.
