Guwahati (Assam) , Feb 16: Bhupen Kumar Borah, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has resigned from the party, citing feelings of being ignored and disrespected. The resignation comes just months before the crucial 2026 Assembly elections in Assam, sending shockwaves through the opposition party.
Borah, a two-time MLA and a senior leader with 32 years of association with the Congress, had been unhappy with the party’s functioning and decision-making processes. He specifically pointed out issues with timely decisions and organizational matters, including who should attend party rallies.
However, after a flurry of meetings with senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Borah has decided to reconsider his resignation. AICC Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh stated that the party high command has not accepted Borah’s resignation and is working to resolve the issues.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed Borah’s resignation, suggesting it highlights the Congress’s internal struggles and “dynastic politics”.
