Kokrajhar (Assam),Jan 6: A hardcore militant and platoon commander of National Democratic Front of Bodoland-Saoraigwra faction(NDFB-S) was killed in an encounter with security forces at New Basti near Daimalupara Kungring in Assam’s Chirang district along Indo-Bhutan border area.
According to police, Indian army unit in Chirang and Assam police launched a joint operation on Sunday at New Basti in Khungring .
Army unit and Assam police laid number of ambushes in the village, one of the ambush party saw one armed militant approaching and asked him to stop. The militant instantly opened fire from a sophisticated weapon and ran away. He was chased and was asked to stop. The militant did not stop and instead fired at the ambush party. The joint team retaliated by opening controlled fire in self-defence.
After the firing stopped from both the sides, the area was searched and one suspected militant was found in an injured condition. He was immediately shifted to JSB Civil Hospital, Kajalgaon where he was declared brought dead.
The slain militant was identified as Sansula Basumatary @ B. Sotbangsha, Self Styled Platoon Commander of 16 Battalion of NDFB(S). He was active in Chirang district and was responsible for extortion, recruitment of new cadres and anti-national activities.
During a search at the encounter site two Pistols, two grenades, war like stores and huge sum of money was recovered.
The killing of Sansula is considered to be a major setback to the militant group and will go a long way in enhancing the safety of the civilians.
