In a tweet , Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma informed that members of Meghalaya’s ‘Whistling Village’ Kongthong also visited him in my office and presented him with a tune composed by Smti. Shidiap Khongsit .
Kongthong a small village is nestled in the Khat-ar Shnong area on way to Sohra in East Khasi Hills, district of Meghalaya 60kms to the south from Shillong in India is a must visit for its panoramic view, unique culture and virgin beauty.
A BJP MLA in Meghalaya has sought the UNESCO heritage tag for Khongthong, known as the country’s only ‘whistling village’ where residents often communicate with each other by whistling.
Minister , Sanbor Shullai has recently met Professor J S Rajput, India’s representative to the UNESCO Executive Board and put forward his demand to accord intangible cultural heritage tag to the remote village in East Khasi Hills district.
Apart from their formal names, residents of the village also have ‘whistling names’ which are used for communicating with each other.”
