Shillong (Meghalaya), Aug 4: A devastating accident occurred on the Shillong-Dawki road, NH 40, near Rngain, on Sunday evening, resulting in the deaths of five people. The vehicle, a small car with registration number ML05 U 4926, plunged into a deep gorge around 9 pm while traveling from Laitlyngkot to Pynursla.
The accident is believed to have been caused by poor visibility due to foggy weather and the absence of a guard wall on the under-construction road. The authorities received information about the accident from a passerby, and a search operation was conducted to locate the vehicle and its occupants.
The extensively damaged vehicle was found, and five dead bodies were recovered. The police tracked the families of the deceased using address details from recovered ID cards. The police are investigating the cause of the accident and have registered a case.
The Shillong-Dawki road has been prone to accidents and landslides, especially during the monsoon season. The ongoing construction work on the highway has raised concerns about safety measures, and authorities have urged tourists and commuters to avoid traveling on this route.
