Shillong ( Meghalaya), Feb 18 : The Government has decided to retain its 1972 Reservation Policy, with some modifications, following a comprehensive review by an Expert Committee. The committee’s report, tabled in the House, recommends changes to ensure fairness and accountability in public employment.
The policy will continue to prioritize social and educational backwardness, rather than population proportions, and will exclude religion as a criterion. The “carry forward” provision will be extended to three years, and the “creamy layer” principle may be introduced to target benefits effectively.
The committee also stressed strict implementation of the reservation roster system. The report is seen as a significant step towards reinforcing inclusive development and fairness in the state’s public policy.
