Shillong (Meghalaya), Jan 22 : The Meghalaya government has successfully relocated 29 street vendors from Civil Hospital junction in Shillong to a newly constructed vending zone at the PWD premises in Barik. This move aims to improve pedestrian movement, vehicle flow, and emergency vehicle access around the hospital. The relocation is part of the government’s efforts to create dignified livelihood spaces for street vendors, guided by the Chief Minister’s emphasis on dignity and livelihood security.
Vendors have expressed satisfaction with the new location, citing adequate space and protection from rain and wind. The initiative has been well received by stakeholders, including vendors and citizens. The Urban Affairs Department plans to scale this effort across the city to improve mobility, enhance pedestrian safety, and create dignified livelihood spaces.
