Nongpoh (Meghalaya), March 30: In a game-changing move, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has launched the E-RISE initiative, catapulting Meghalaya’s eri silk industry into the fast lane! This ₹4.61 crore power move is set to transform the lives of 1,200 farming households across 22 clusters in 5 blocks, turbocharging the state’s eri-silk economy.
Unlocking the Golden Potential
The E-RISE initiative is a comprehensive package, delivering high-yielding feed plants, climate-resilient rearing houses, and cutting-edge electric spinning machines. This is expected to generate a staggering ₹9.36 crore annual value, doubling the initial investment.
From Cocoon to Success
The move is a direct response to farmers’ feedback, who were selling cocoons at ₹700, while value-added yarn fetched ₹3,000-₹3,500 outside the state. With E-RISE, value addition happens in Ri-Bhoi itself, benefiting 7,000+ farmers and positioning the district as a leader in organic and sustainable silk production.
Sports Get a Boost Too!
In a related development, Conrad K Sangma laid the foundation stone for the Umsning Mini Stadium, fulfilling a long-standing demand. This is part of Meghalaya’s push to expand sports infrastructure ahead of the National Games 2027.
