Shillong (Meghalaya), Jan 9: Shillong Lajong staged a thrilling comeback to defeat defending champions Rangdajied United 3-1 in the first quarterfinal of the Meghalaya State League 2024 at the Wahiajer Sports Complex today.
Lajong’s victory marked the continuation of a unique tradition in the MSL, where no champion has successfully defended their title.
Ieitlang Syiemlieh scored the opening goal for Rangdajied in the 4th minute, but Lajong’s Iohborlang L Lyngkhoi equalized from the penalty spot in the 7th minute. Lyngkhoi struck again in the 62nd minute, and an own goal by Rangdajied’s Manbhakupar Iawphniaw in the 87th minute sealed the win for Lajong.
The match was attended by a large and passionate crowd, who witnessed an intense encounter between the two Shillong-based teams. Lajong now leads the head-to-head record between the teams with 3 wins and 1 loss.
Iohborlang L Lyngkhoi was named Player of the Match and received his award from Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla.
The next two quarterfinals will be held on Saturday, featuring Sutnga vs Ladthadlaboh and Mawlai vs Khliehmawlieh.
