Shillong (Meghalaya), April 1: The state successfully hosted the 1st Indian Sailing League (ISL) at Umiam, showcasing exceptional talent and sportsmanship. The five-day event featured 182 participants, including 58 international sailors, and saw Bhopal Tritons emerge as the winner. Shillong Umiam Navigators (SUN) secured a podium finish, while Deccan Skippers, VIR Cholas, and Pune Peshwas rounded out the top six.
Chaitanya Awasthi, IAS, praised the meticulous planning and organisation, highlighting the state’s potential to produce Olympic sailors. Admiral Karambir Singh, Former Chief of Naval Staff, commended the government’s support, stating it was unmatched by other states.
The event featured various categories, including ILCA 4 boys and girls, ILCA 6 and 7, 420, Optimist, Techno 293, and Olympic classes. A ₹1.5 crore prize pool was awarded to teams and individual winners. Meghalaya now looks forward to hosting the 4th Northeast Regatta, cementing its position as a premier water sports destination.
