Shillong (Meghalaya), Oct 14: A potentially volatile situation was defused in the East Khasi Hills district after a mentally challenged man was rescued by the police from an angry mob that had gathered at the Kynroh Nongbri village community hall. The man, identified as Arnikstar Rytathiang, 35, from Mawthlong village, was suspected to be a “menshohnoh” and was being held captive by the villagers.
The mob had gathered at the community hall, shouting and pelting stones, and even attempted to lynch the victim. However, the situation was brought under control after the police team led by the I/C Sohiong and DSP (Ops) from Shillong, along with the O/C Mawngap and his team, rushed to the scene and rescued the victim.
After being rescued, Arnikstar was sent for medical examination at the Sohiong CHC, where he was found to have sustained minor injuries. It was later revealed that the victim was undergoing treatment for mental health issues at MIMHANS Shillong. A case has been registered at Mawngap P.S for further investigation and legal action.
