The Executive Engineer of PWD (Building) Ransom Sutnga has stated that the cause for the collapse of the dome at the New Assembly Building at Mawdiangdiang was due to a design flaw.
He said that the false columns atop the cross-beam constructed as per the design could not support the weight of the dome and GRC moulding as the dome weights approximately 70 tonnes.
Sutnga added that the design of the building was vetted by IIT Roorkee.
The Executive Engineer informed that the debris will be cleared in 2 weeks time and reconstruction will begin with a new simpler design and would take another 8 months to be completed.
