Shillong (Meghalaya), Oct 21: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) commemorated the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab, a distinguished freedom fighter, politician, and literary figure. The event featured an invited lecture by Prof. Ashwani Kumar, who spoke on “Grassroots Governance and the Rise of Maternal Welfare in India.”
Dr. Mahtab’s multifaceted contributions were highlighted, including his role as the first Chief Minister of Odisha and his instrumental role in the state’s industrialization through projects like the Hirakud Dam. His literary contributions, including the Sahitya Akademi Award he received in 1983, were also recalled.
Prof. Kumar’s lecture emphasized the importance of humility and gratitude in governance and discussed how Dr. Mahtab’s vision of grassroots governance inspired transformative welfare measures in India. He cited examples of successful programs in Odisha, such as Subhadra Yojana and Janani Suraksha Yojana, which have improved maternal health and women’s empowerment.
The event was a tribute to Dr. Mahtab’s legacy and a reminder of the importance of effective governance in promoting social welfare.
