Shillong (Meghalaya), April 11 : The state is indeed making significant strides in tourism development, focusing on eco-tourism, infrastructure, and community engagement. The state government has allocated ₹4,000 crore for tourism, covering over 50 accommodation units, six iconic projects, and visitor facilities at key sites. Notable projects include a 600 PPH ropeway in Shillong, a Convention Centre at Tura, and a skywalk and tourist hub at Mawkdok .
The government is promoting community-led tourism through initiatives like the Meghalaya Homestay Scheme, providing subsidies to local entrepreneurs. Partnerships with brands like Taj and Aurika Hotels are also underway to expand hospitality capacity.
Some recent developments include the re-tendering of the Orchid Lake Resort and the Wahkaliar Viewpoint project. The state is leveraging central schemes, including those under the Ministry of Tourism and DoNER, to support tourism growth.
