Shillong ( Meghalaya), Feb 17 : Meghalaya’s capital is on the cusp of a major transformation with the New Shillong City project, a visionary initiative poised to become the state’s growth engine and job creator. The project, sanctioned with ₹6,000 crore, is taking shape in phases, prioritizing water security, power reliability, and eco-friendly design.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma outlined the project’s progress, highlighting key developments such as the Administrative City, Knowledge City, and a dedicated Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) corridor. The city will boast modern infrastructure, including a new secretariat complex, legislative assembly building, and IT parks, generating over 1.5 lakh jobs.
The project prioritizes environmental sustainability, with the Shillong Master Plan identifying flood-prone and landslide-prone areas and restricting unsafe development. The government has also amended the Meghalaya Building Byelaws to ban construction on slopes over 50 degrees.
