Shillong ( Meghalaya), Feb 26 : .On Saturday night a polling officer died in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district when the vehicle in which he was travelling overturned .
The vehicle carrying polling officials enroute to Jangrapara LP School met with an accident at a remote village in West Garo Hills district on Saturday night.
The other officials and security personnel reported minor injuries and were taken to Tikrikilla community health centre from where Chesham Ch Marak and his colleagues were referred to a hospital in Goalpara. Chesham, the second polling officer, who suffered head injuries was later taken to Guwahati where he was declared brought dead at the hospital, the CEO said.
In a statement, Kharkongor said that the entire Election Machinery in general and West Garo Hills in particular deeply condole the very unfortunate & untimely demise of Chesham Ch Marak deputed as 2nd Polling officer at Jangrapara polling station under Tikrikilla AC in an unfortunate road accident at Potamati village.
Late Chesan Marak was a keen and dedicated worker & a flag bearer of democracy. We continue to uphold his family in our prayers at this hour of grief.
The Election Department is extending an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 15 lakh which will be paid to the next of kin of the official ,due to the unfortunate event of death of the above official while on polling duty.
We salute the tangible contributions of all polling officials involved in the poll process and acknowledge with gratitude ,the momentous efforts put in by each and every member of the election machinery as the true “foot soldiers “ of democracy ,the statement added .
