Shillong (Meghalaya), Sep 23: The untimely demise of Assam’s legendary singer Zubeen Garg has sent shockwaves across Meghalaya, with Minister Sanbor Shullai expressing deep sadness over the loss. Zubeen’s immense talent, passion, and dedication to music have left a lasting impact on India’s rich cultural heritage, bridging gaps across states and bringing the spirit of the Northeast to national and global audiences.
The Government of Meghalaya and its people join in mourning this irreparable loss. Minister Sanbor Shullai extended heartfelt condolences to Zubeen’s family, friends, colleagues, and admirers, acknowledging the singer’s legacy in inspiring many musicians and artists from Meghalaya. Zubeen’s music will continue to motivate future generations, but his absence will be deeply felt in the music world.
Zubeen was a multifaceted artist from Assam, known for his work as a singer, music director, actor, film director, and scriptwriter. Born on November 18, 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya, he later became a prominent figure in Assamese music and cinema. Zubeen’s contributions to the music industry were vast, with over 16,000 songs recorded in more than 40 languages and dialects. His breakthrough in Bollywood came with the song “Ya Ali” from the 2006 film “Gangster,” which catapulted him to national fame.
Some of his notable works include albums like “Anamika” (1992), “Mukha” (1994), and “Chandini Raat” (1995). He also acted in several Assamese films, such as “Tumi Mor Mathu Mor” (2000), “Mission China” (2017), and “Kanchanjangha” (2019). Zubeen Garg’s impact on Assamese culture extends beyond music and cinema, as he was also recognized for his activism, philanthropy, and efforts to uplift Assamese culture on the national stage.
Throughout his career, Zubeen Garg received numerous awards and accolades, including the National Film Award for Best Music Direction, Filmfare Awards, and the Assam Ratna, the highest civilian honor in Assam. He was also awarded a D.Litt. degree by the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya, in recognition of his contributions.
