Imphal / Moirang , Sept 6: A sophisticated long-range bomb was used in a recent attack on a locality in Moirang, Bishnupur district, resulting in one fatality and five injuries. The deceased, an elderly man, was struck by splinters from the bomb while performing a ritual in a nearby house and died on the spot.
The blast has caused significant damage. State security forces have arrived at the scene and are currently investigating the attack.
Suspected militants launched a fresh bomb attack in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday morning damaging at least two structures, police said.
Rockets were fired from elevated positions in the nearby hill areas of Churachandpur district toward the low-lying residential locality of Tronglaobi, located around 45km from state capital Imphal.
The range of the rockets was estimated to be over 3 km, police said.
The missile attack was reportedly launched by Kuki Militants at the former Chief Minister’s late M. Koireng Singh house at Sendra Road in Moirang, on Friday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as RK Rabei Singh (70) of Moirang Pheewangbam Leikai. He was preparing former CM Koireng Singh’s late daughter-in-law Asthi ceremony at the house when the missile blasted.
The injured persons have been identified as Salam Nanao (40) of Sendra Road, Galena Mairembam (13) of Sendra Road, Rajeev @ Bobo (58) of Sendra Road, Kongjengbam Jogindro (52) of Moirang Okshongbung and Ngangom Ibobi (65) of Moirang Okshongbung.
MLA Thongam Shanti Singh and high-ranking Police officials of Manipur Police Department have rushed in the spot and are taking stock of the situation.
