Tura(Meghalaya), Sep 8: Cracking down on the illegal timber trade that has become the talking point of Garo Hills, the state forest department today, Sep 8, dismantled one such illegal set up in the village of Kalapani, Chibinang under Phulbari police station in West Garo Hills.
The area of operation falls under the Hollaidanga Forest Range under WGH territorial division.
As per sources, the raid on the saw mill was based on a tip off from a source. Following the tip off, a joint team comprising the state forest and local policemen, began the raid that took place early morning.
The raid led to the team not only confiscating the machineries being used within the built but also dismantling the complete set up. Timber, that was present in the mill was also confiscated by the team.
The latest raid comes after notices have been sent by the state forest department to various illegally operating saw mills and stone quarries. While many such illegal set ups have already complied with the order, many are yet to do so.
“We have confiscated the machines and the entire structure has been dismantled. We will continue to crack down on such illegal set ups and ensure they remain closed,” said DFO in charge for WGH, SWGH and SGH, Rupanker Marak.
