Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 14: The Union Home Ministry has extended the ban on the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a militant outfit operating in Meghalaya, for another five years. This move is aimed at curbing the group’s anti-national and subversive activities that pose a threat to India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to reports, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has expressed concerns that if the HNLC’s activities are not curbed, it may escalate its militant activities, propagate anti-national sentiments, and incite violence in the country. The ban has been extended under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
The HNLC has been involved in various militant activities, including supporting violent extremism and militancy in the region. The outfit has also been accused of attempting to destabilize the government established by law.
This move by the Union Home Ministry is seen as a significant step in cracking down on separatist and militant activities in the country. The ban on HNLC comes into effect immediately and will remain in force for five years, unless revoked or modified by the government.
