Shillong ( Meghalaya(, Aug 6 : The Meghalaya High Court has taken note of the state government’s efforts to address the issue of stray dogs in the state. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Kaustav Paul, seeking directions for the authorities to prevent and control the stray dog population.
The government has implemented the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001. Committees have been constituted in all districts to oversee the implementation of the legislation.
The court noted that the government has taken several measures, including setting up awareness camps, conducting vaccination drives, sterilizing and castrating stray dogs, and providing shelters for them. Registration of pet dogs is also being carried out.
The court has allowed the petitioner, Kaustav Paul, to file an affidavit responding to the government’s report by Aug 25. The PIL will be listed again on Aug 28, for further consideration and disposal.
