Shillong (Meghalaya), March 22: Tensions are running high in Garo Hills as the region braces for the upcoming Autonomous District Council election, with the Opposition leader Dr. Mukul Sangma urging Governor C.H. Vijayashankar to intervene and address the volatile situation.
In a strongly worded letter, Sangma highlighted the escalating violence and unrest in the region, sparked by demands to bar non-tribals from contesting in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election. The issue has led to clashes, resulting in two deaths, and has put the entire region on edge.
Citing the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, Sangma emphasized that the GHADC was formed to safeguard the interests of the Garo people and urged the government to address the concerns of the community. The government has already postponed the election and extended the District Council’s term, but Sangma wants concrete action to prevent further unrest.
The situation is being closely watched, with citizens hoping for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. As one local resident put it, “We want peace and stability in our region. The government must act now to address our concerns.”
