New Delhi, Sep 23: “Rimdogittanga” (Rapture), a visually stunning Garo-language film directed by Dominic Megam Sangma, has taken home the Best Feature Film in Garo award at the 71st National Film Awards. This cinematic masterpiece tells a haunting story of a 10-year-old boy battling night blindness in a village gripped by fears of child kidnappers, showcasing the richness of Garo cultural beliefs and traditions.
The film’s win is a testament to Dominic’s unique voice and vision, with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma praising his “powerful storytelling” for captivating audiences worldwide. “Rimdogittanga” has been acclaimed for its evocative visual language and emotional resonance, earning a Rajat Kamal (Silver Lotus) and a cash prize of ₹2 lakh.
This recognition marks a milestone for Garo identity and storytelling, with the state government planning to establish a Film Institute in Meghalaya and host district-level film festivals to nurture local talent. The film’s success is a proud moment for the Garo Hills, highlighting the importance of preserving and promoting regional cultures through art.
