Imphal (Manipur), Sept 1: In a fresh wave of violence, Kuki militants have launched an attack on Koutruk, Singda, and Kadangband in Manipur this afternoon, killing one person and reigniting tensions in the region.
Angom Surbala, aged 31 years wife of Angom Ingo, a resident of Phayeng, was struck in the head by a bullet in the Koutruk area and died from her injuries.
The two injured has been identified as Angom Memicha, aged 7, daughter of Angom Ingo of Phayeng and Raj Toijam, aged 26 years, son of Toijam Kondum of Nambol Makha.
The injured were rushed to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), here.
The attack occurred around 2:30 PM when the militants targeted Koutruk Maning Ching. Angom Surbala and her daughter, Angom Memicha were struck by bullets fired by the Kuki militants. Angom Memicha sustained bullet injury on her right hand.
Manipur Rifles and IRB personnel, who were stationed in the area, immediately retaliated, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
In response to the attack, state and central forces quickly mobilized additional troops and the troops have been sent to secure the affected areas. The intense exchange of gunfire is ongoing in the area.
Police said that Kuki militants have deployed numerous RPGs using high-tech drones. While drone bombs have commonly been used in general warfares, this recent deployment of drones to deploy explosives against security forces and the civilians marks a significant escalation.
The statement added that the involvement of highly trained professionals, possibly with technical expertise and support, cannot be ruled out. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and the police are prepared to respond to any contingency that may arise.
