Tura(Meghalaya), Sep 15: A firefight between police personnel from the town of Tura and a former militant near the Daldagre locality led to the death of the militant after he was killed in retaliatory fire from the police.
As per information received, the former militant, Robison Marak (resident of Tikrkilla) was shot dead at about 7:30 PM yesterday, Sep 14. Robison was earlier a part of the ASAK and UALA militant groups which were active between 2014 – 2018. He was allegedly involved in many criminal activities after the groups were disbanded.
“We had received information from credible sources that a group of suspicious people with sophisticated arms were seen near Daldagre,” said superintendent of police, WGH, Vivekanand Singh.
According to the SP, several Naka checks were installed across the many routes around Tura and its outskirts to verify the credibility of the information received by the police.
“A counter insurgency operation was launched and Nakas set up to nab the miscreants,” he added.
At around 7:30 PM last evening, a police team at one of the Naka point leading to the village of Daldagre noticed a bike rider approaching from the Garobadha – Tura road. On seeing the police, the rider jumped off the bike and immediately began to fire in the direction of the police. Acting in self defense, the policemen fired at the shooter leading to him sustaining bullet injuries, which proved fatal for him.
After the completion of the operation, the DIG Western Range was informed as was the district administration to verify the facts of the case. During the search of the place of the incident, the police found one AK – 56 rifle, one AK magazine along with 19 live rounds of 7,62 ammunition.
A black platina bike was also found at the spot which was being ridden by the militant, 5 empty cases of 7.62 ammo and 20 empty cartridges of 9 mm ammo. The police chief further confirmed that the gunman was alone when he opened fire.
The body was then taken to the Tura Civil Hospital for a post mortem while the family has been informed on the incident.
