Shillong(Meghalaya), Oct , 1 : The Office of the District Election Officer, East Khasi Hills District Shillong today organised the celebration of the District Level Programme of International Day of Older Persons at Mercy Home at Demthring, here .
Speaking on the occasion, R. Wahlang, ADC said that the elderly have been the true pillars and played a vital role in strengthening democracy. He said that the Election Commission has decided to facilitate voting of elderly voters in every district by introducing vote from home besides special initiatives at polling stations. Postal ballots will be allowed for those aged above 80 after filling Form 12 D if they are unable to go to the polling stations.
He further added that the aim is to involve more senior citizens in the voting process as they have a lifetime experience.
The senior citizens or 80+ voters from the different constituencies under the district were felicitated during the programme.
