Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 19: The stage is set for the District Council Elections in Khasi and Jaintia Hills, with the polls scheduled to take place on February 21.
Chief Secretary GP Wahlang today said that he has intimated the Chief Secretary of Assam about the elections, as some polling parties will have to cross through Assam to reach their respective constituencies. Wahlang assured that all possible help has been assured, and no problems are anticipated.
Wahlang also informed that common platforms for candidates have been set up, and instructions have been given to ensure that no noise is created after 10 pm, keeping in mind the examination season.
The District Council Elections are considered a low-profile affair compared to MP or MLA elections. However, the polls are crucial for the local administration.
There are 10 general observers for the district council election. In Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council, there are 144 candidates while in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council 158 candidates are in fray.
