Kolkata (West Bengal), May 20 : The cyclone Amphan has wreaked havoc across the eastern coast of India after the ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’ made a landfall in West Bengal’s Digha on Wednesday afternoon , leaving a trail of destruction.
Acoording to sources at least 10 to 12 people have already been killed due to the cyclone.
CM , Mamata Banerjee said that reports from the interior areas are yet reach but confirmed that there has been heavy damage and to buildings , bridges , roads and agricultural crops .
With wind speeds of 160-170 kmph, gusting to 190 kmph, coupled with heavy rain, the Digha coast was badly hit in the state’s East Medinipur district.
The terrible storm could continued for four hours, predicted the India Meteorological Department, coupled with 3-5 metres of tidal waves. While the cyclone made landfall at 2.30 pm in West Bengal, the process was slated to continue till late evening, the IMD earlier said.
Earlier, NDRF and state governments of West Bengal and Odisha evacuated five lakh and 1.5 lakh people from coastal areas of the states. NDRF Director General SN Pradhan said that NDRF has deployed 20 teams in Odisha and 19 in West Bengal.
“24 additional teams are on hot-standby and can be air-lifted within 15 minutes if the need arises. Rest of the teams in the two states are engaged in road clearance and restoration,” he said.
