Shillong (Meghalaya), Aug 8 : NorthEast United FC stormed into the quarterfinals of the Durand Cup 2025 with a thrilling 2-1 win over Shillong Lajong FC in a NorthEast derby match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here . Alaaeddine Ajaraie’s double strike in the 5th and 83rd minutes proved decisive, while Figo Syndai’s goal in the 81st minute was too little, too late, for Shillong Lajong.
The defending champions secured their spot in the quarterfinals with a match to spare, thanks to a better head-to-head record against Shillong Lajong. NorthEast United FC and Shillong Lajong FC both finished with six points from three matches, but Ajaraie’s heroics ensured the Highlanders’ progression.
With this win, NorthEast United FC needs just a point in their last match to qualify as clear group winners.
