Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 10: Umphyrnai Presbyterian School recently celebrated its Platinum Jubilee, marking 75 years of providing quality education. The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who highlighted the government’s priority on education since 2018, with various intervention programs upgrading numerous schools and colleges.
The school has a rich history, starting as a Lower Primary school established by missionaries in 1950. It has since grown, achieving a 100% pass rate in SSLC exams. Currently, it has 380 students and 16 teachers. The school aims to introduce a Higher Secondary section as part of its Platinum Jubilee vision.
The Chief Minister announced a grant of ₹20 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund for the school’s infrastructure development and musical instruments. He praised the perseverance of the institution and its managing committee over the decades, expressing admiration for the Principal’s long service since 1978.
The Meghalaya government faces challenges in the education sector due to a “fragmented structure” with nearly 25 teacher associations. The Chief Minister assured that the government would not adopt measures harming livelihoods and is working on restructuring the salary system for approximately 20,000 ad hoc and SSA teachers.
