Guwahati (Assam): Arya Vidyapeeth College rode on a late goal to edge out Dispur Academy 2-1 in an exciting college boys semifinal of the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports football tournament here on Wednesday.
Sunil Ingti helped Dispur Academy claim an early initiative with a 12th minute goal but Arya Vidyapeeth striker Wangkheimayum Olen Singh sneaked in a 45th minute goal to ensure the first half honours were even (1-1). The battle at the Assam Engineering College ground intensified after the break and it looked like the contest will spill over to a penalty shootout but Ningthoujam Binan Singh turned the game Arya Vidyapeeth's way with an excellent 80th minute strike.
Midfielder Vishal Sunar, who controlled the proceedings superbly for Arya Vidyapeeth was adjudged player of the match.
North East Institute of Management and Technology had a relatively easy passage into the final by recording a 3-0 victory over NEF Law College in the other college boys’semifinal.
After a barren first session, the Management boys surged ahead with a 61st minute goal by Mukesh Rahang. Player of the match Ishan Borah then sealed the rivals' fate with a double strike (70th and 73rd minutes).
The school girls’semifinals were one-sided affairs with Anchalik Jatiya Vidyalaya and Bethany School, Garchuk setting up a title clash by registering easy victories.
Anchalik Jatiya routed Parijat Academy 7-0 while Bethany School handed out a 6-0 drubbing to Dispur Academy and interestingly both teams had an identical scoreline (4-0) at half-time.
Player of the match Pakhila Boro was the star for Anchalik Jatiya netting three goals while Mijinshri Boro (two goals), Richima Al Dal Boro and Jwmwi Daimary (one each) also played a part in the victory.
Archana Ingti led the charge for Bethany with three goals that also fetched her player of the match honours. Sanjamwi Brahma (two goals) and Leena Teron (one goal) were the other scorers.
The finals will be played on Friday at the same venue.
