Meghalaya :Supreme Court sets Former Cop & dreaded Rebel Leader Free

New Delhi /Shillong , Mar 22 : Meghalaya based , Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA )chairman Champion Sangma is set to walk free after the Supreme Court has ordered his immediate release while berating the State Government for illegal detention of former Meghalaya police officer.
A local weekly The Shillong Times reported , " a  Bench of Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan   also set aside the order passed by Additional District Magistrate (Judicial) allowing an application made by the prosecution against the release of Sangma."

Meghalaya :Timothy D Shira elected deputy speaker

Shillong (Meghalaya), Mar 21: Senior National People's Party (NPP) MLA Timothy D Shira was today elected the deputy speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly.
Shira, 68, defeated Opposition candidate David Nongrum by 20 votes.
He was elected from Resubelpara constituency in North Garo Hills district in the recently held Assembly elections.

Meghalaya : World's Longest sandstone cave explored

Shillong (Meghalaya), March 20 : The world’s longest sandstone cave at 24,583 metres in length has been discovered in Meghalaya's   Mawsynram-Mawlongbna belt of  by a team of cavers.  
The cave was discovered in 2016, but its actual length was found during an expedition by the Meghalaya Adventurers’ Association (MAA) to measure and map it between February 5 and March 1 this year, said Brian Daly Kharpran, a founding member of the organisation.

Congress attacks Meghalaya Governor for Hindi address

Shillong (Meghalaya) ,Mar 17:Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad, who scripted history by being the first to address the state Assembly in Hindi on Friday, was criticized by Congress members.
Former Urban Affairs Minister and Congress legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh walked out of the House in protest while Prasad was delivering his address in "chaste" Hindi.

Meghalaya: Former CM & UDP Chief elected as the Speaker

Shillong (Meghalaya), Mar 12: Former Chief Minister and United Democratic Party Chief, Donkupar Roy was today elected as the Speaker of the 10th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Roy, who is also the longest serving legistalor in the state, defeated opposition Congress MLA Winnerson D Sangma by securing 35 votes.
Sangma, a two-time legislator from Salmanpara, got only 20 votes. One vote was rejected.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma To Seek Trust Vote on Monday

Shillong (Meghalaya), March 12 :  Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will face a floor test at a special session of the Assembly on Monday to prove his majority, officials said on Sunday.
Prior to Mr Sangma proving his majority in the 60-member House, Protem Speaker Timothy Dalbot Shira will preside over the session to elect the Speaker of the newly constituted tenth Meghalaya Assembly.

In the morning fixture 2016 champions Smit pulled off a 4-1 victory over Lawmali.

Meghalaya Chief Minister allocates portfolios

Shillong (Meghalaya), Mar 7: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday allotted porfolios to his council of ministers keeping finance, personnel, political, cabinet affairs and others to himself.
The four ministers from the National People’s Party (NPP) were awarded with plum portfolios.

Meghalaya :Conrad sworn -in as the 12th Chief Minister

Shillong(Meghalaya), Mar 6: National People's Party (NPP) leader Conrad Kongkal Sangma, son of former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Sangma, was on Tuesday sworn in as the 12th chief minister of Meghalaya.
Governor Ganga Prasad administered the oath of office and secrecy to the 40-year-old Tura Lok Sabha member, who was projected as the leader of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition.
